I enjoyed this documentary about Christopher Isherwood and Don Bachardy a lot. It was cool to see the personal lives of artists I respect, also they had such an interesting relationship. They met when Isherwood was an established writer and Bachardy was still a teenager. Looking at that age/power differential from the outside it looks sketchy, but it’s so obvious that they loved each other, and were important to each other. The documentary acknowledges their difference in experience and looks at how they made it work. Love is weird sometimes. Watching this movie there is no doubt that they were very deeply in love. They are the kind of weird occasionally uncomfortable gay role models I want. A lot of the gay relationships we’re presented with are very conventional and proper, which is disappointing. Us gays are more than that. It’s important to see complicated relationships between creative people who love and support each other.
