Do you ever think about how Deve Hynes went from this…

to this…

to this…

I was listening to Blood Orange this morning, and thinking about what an interesting path that is. He’s made at least three distinct sorts of music, which are all unique, and all great. I used to read NME a lot when I was younger, and the change of pace from Test Icicles (juvenile, shouty, but still fun) to Lightspeed Champion (more grown up, comfortable, almost boring but not quite) was so remarkable. It seemed like such a strange turn in direction, but some how it made sense? Or maybe it didn’t make sense, but it worked in it’s nonsense. And then Blood Orange is something new again, all slinky, almost pop, but weirder and twistier. He’s a really interesting song writer, and I’m excited to see what he does next, and also interested in how all of these different types of self expression fit together, and what we should make of them as a body of work.
