I enjoyed this movie, but I don’t have whole lot to say about it. It’s a funny, and mean, and ultimately kind of sweet. The main characters are objectively pretty horrible people, but it works because they’re aware of this, and trying to be better. Mostly failing at that, but at least trying to try. They’re aware of how broken they are, and that awareness actually creates a lot of their problems. It’s the story of fucked up kids who grow up to be fucked up adults. The thing that stops it from being sad is the fact that they have each other. The heart of the movie is the relationship between Wiig and Hader’s characters, and in the end that’s beautiful. They’re self destructive fuck ups, but they have each other, and that makes the world workable.
In the end it’s a funny movie, and a sad movie, and a very very good movie.
